May 27, 2020

What is happening?

All users of Harvard Zoom must upgrade to version 5.0 or higher by Saturday, May 30, 2020, to continue using the service. If you do not upgrade by May 30 you will be unable to join or host meetings. If you're unsure what version of Zoom you're using, learn how to find out

Why?

Zoom 5.0 is a required update featuring important security enhancements and encryption to keep your meetings, classes, and data secure. Zoom 5.0 also includes improved in-meeting controls for managing participants.

What do I need to do?

For HUIT-managed Windows computers:

When you are working remotely, the only way for your Windows computer to receive important system and service updates—including the latest version of Zoom—is to regularly connect to Harvard’s virtual private network (VPN). If you have never connected to VPN before, learn how and get started.

To receive the latest version of Zoom and other important system updates:

  • Connect to VPN, and stay connected throughout the day
  • Your computer will automatically download updates
  • If you see a HUIT popup box prompting you to install updates or restart your computer, follow the on-screen instructions

To manually upgrade Zoom:

  • Connect to VPN, and stay connected throughout the day
  • Search for Software Center in your Windows taskbar and open the app
  • Find Zoom in the Applications list. If Zoom is not listed, stay connected to VPN and check again in an hour
  • Click Install and follow the on-screen instructions

For Macs and personal computers:
