Technology has never been more essential to teaching, learning, researching, and working at Harvard. Protecting our users’ privacy while using our systems is critically important. Our data privacy program works toward this goal.

Core objectives

We are working to achieve these objectives:

  • Proactively design data privacy into our technology and processes
  • Create policies and initiatives to identify and respond to internal and external data privacy risks
  • Educate and train Harvard staff to keep data privacy at the forefront of their work
  • Communicate our policies and practices to the Harvard community

Guiding principles

We are working to apply these guidelines to HUIT data processing:

  • Collect as needed for a legitimate business purpose
  • Use and share consistent with the purpose of data collection
  • Retain only as long as needed for the purpose of collection
  • Secure by ensuring controls are risk-based and appropriate
  • Comply with applicable law
