UNIX IMAP Configuration



IMAP Configuration for Outlook 2013 

These settings should be used ONLY for people whose primary mailboxes
are on the FAS UNIX mail system.

To create an Outlook 2013 profile for an IMAP connection to the FAS UNIX server  

  1. Run Outlook 2013
  2. At the Startup Screen. Click Next to continue 
  3. Select Yes and click Next 
  4. Select Manually setup or additional server types and click Next 
  5. Select POP or IMAP and click Next 
  6. On the Internet Email Settings window, enter your User Information, Server Information, and Logon Information  
  • Email Address: Your FAS UNIX Email address 
  • Account Type: IMAP 
  • Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.fas.harvard.edu
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.fas.harvard.edu 
  • User Name: FAS Username or Net ID
  • Password: FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey
  • Click on the More Settings... button

7. Click on the Advanced tab 

  • Below "Incoming server (IMAP):" choose SSL in the dropdown menu. This will also change the port to 993 
  • Below "Outgoing server (SMTP):" choose the TLS option in the dropdown menu. Specify a port of 587
8. Click on the Outgoing Server tab  


  • Check the box for "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication 
  • Click OK to close the Internet Email Settings window  
9. Click Next to close the Internet Email Settings (IMAP) window 
A window should appear confirming "You're all set!"  















IMAP Configuration for Outlook 2010 

These settings should be used ONLY for people whose primary mailboxes
are on the FAS UNIX mail system.

To create an Outlook 2010 profile for an IMAP connection to the Harvard FAS UNIX server

  1. Run Outlook 2010
  2. At the Startup Screen. Click Next to continue 
  3. Select Yes and click Next 
  4. Select Manually setup or additional server types and click Next 
  5. Select POP or IMAP and click Next 
  6. On the Internet Email Settings window, enter your User Information, Server Information, and Logon Information  
  • Email Address: Your FAS UNIX Email address 
  • Account Type: IMAP 
  • Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.fas.harvard.edu
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.fas.harvard.edu 
  • User Name: FAS Username or Net ID
  • Password: FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey
  • Click on the More Settings... button
7. Click on the Advanced tab
 
  • Below "Incoming server (IMAP):" choose SSL in the dropdown menu. This will also change the port to 993

8. Click on the Outgoing Server tab  

  • Check the box for "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication".

9. Click Next to close the Internet Email Settings (IMAP) window 
A window should appear confirming "You're all set!"  









 








Mac Mail: IMAP Configuration 

These settings should be used ONLY for people whose primary mailboxes
are on the FAS UNIX mail system.

These instructions work for Mail for OS X

Open Mail
  • NOTE: If Mac Mail is NOT your default mail client, a Welcome to Mac Mail Wizard will immediately appear, and you can start these instructions at step 4. If you have used Mac Mail before, please continue to step 

  1. Click Mail
  2. Click Add Account
  3. In the Welcome/Add Account screen, select account type: 'Other mail account' and add the following: 
  • Full Name: Add the name to appear on this account.   
  • Email Address: FAS UNIX Email address 
  • Password: FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey
4. Click Continue. 

5. In the Incoming Server Screen, add the following: 

  • Account Type: IMAP 
  • Description: IMAP 
  • Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.fas.harvard.edu
  • User Name: FAS Username or Net ID
  • Password: FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey

6. Click Continue 

7. In the Outgoing Mail Server screen, add the following: 

  • Description: [optional] 
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.fas.harvard.edu  (If SMTP fails to connect use 140.247.35.194  You may be prompted with a security message, click Connect)
  • Use only this server should be checked 
  • Use Authentication should be checked 
  • User Name: FAS Username  
  • Password: FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey

8. Click Continue
This is the Account Summary Screen

  • Double check all the information to make sure it is correct 
  • Take Account Online should be checked 

9. Click Create

10. Now that the account is created we will turn off IDLE which isn't selectable during account creation

11. With Mac Mail open, Click Mail on the toolbar

  • Click on Preferences
  • Click the Accounts Tab 
  • Click Advanced 
  • Un-check the box labeled Use IDLE command if the server supports it

NOTE: Under the IMAP inbox, two grayed out folders called .mailbox and .mlbxlsttmpp may appear.  These are system files. Under no circumstances should they be edited or changed. Editing these files could result in the loss of all mail data 

 If you are able to receive email but not able to send. Please manually change the authentication to External TLS (Client certificate) and input the account credentials. 













IMAP Configuration for iOS

These settings should be used ONLY for people whose primary mailboxes
are on the FAS UNIX mail system.

  1. Press the Home button to access the Home screen  
  2. Select the Settings icon 
  3. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars 
  4. Select Add Account 
  5. Select Other 
  6. Select Add Mail Account 
  7. Enter the following values 
  • Name: Add the name to appear on this account   
  • Address: FAS UNIX Email address  
  • Password: FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey
  • Description:  [optional]

8. Select Next 

9. In the next screen, IMAP should be selected by default. Enter the following values for Incoming Mail Server 

  • Host Name: imap.fas.harvard.edu 
  • User Name: your FAS ID or Net ID
  • Password: FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey
10. Scroll down and enter the following values for your Outgoing Mail Server 
  • Host Name: smtp.fas.harvard.edu (If SMTP fails to connect use 140.247.35.194  You may be prompted with a security message, click Connect)
  • User Name: your FAS ID or Net ID
  • Password: FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey

11. Click Next 

12.When  Mail has finished verifying your account settings, tap Save. You will return to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars configuration screen 

13. Click on your new account 

14. Scroll down to Outgoing Mail Server and select SMTP

15. Click on the entry for smtp.fas.harvard.edu and verify the following settings: 

  • Use SSL: ON 
  • Server Port: 465 

16. Tap Done and then tap Account 

17. Scroll down to Outgoing Mail Server and tap Advanced 

18. Scroll down and verify the following Incoming Settings 

  • Use SSL: ON 
  • Authentication: Password 
  • Server Port: 587 
You can also choose to store special folders on the IMAP server using the Mailbox Behaviors settings on this screen 

Tap Account and then tap Done
When finished, press the Home button and tap the Mail icon to test your settings. If you entered anything incorrectly you may receive a generic error message. Check your settings or try re-entering your password (the source of most errors). 













Android: IMAP Configuration 

These settings should be used ONLY for people whose primary mailboxes
are on the FAS UNIX mail system.

These instructions were prepared using a Samsung Galaxy S. There are likely to be some differences with other Android devices. 

  1. Go to home screen, press Applications
  2. Select the Email icon
  3. Under Accounts tap Add Account
  4. Enter your email address (e.g. jharvard@fas.harvard.edu) and your FAS UNIX mail Password or HarvardKey
  5. Select Send email from this account by default 
  6. Click Manual setup
  7. Choose IMAP account 
  8. Change your username to just your FASID (i.e. jharvard not jharvard@fas)
  9. Re-enter your password 
  10. Set IMAP server as imap.fas.harvard.edu 
  11. Set Security type to SSL (accept all certificates) 
  12. Click Next
  13. Set SMTP server to smtp.fas.harvard.edu 
  14. Set Security type to TLS. Port: 587
  15. On the next screen insert your account name

 






Thunderbird: IMAP Configuration

These settings should be used ONLY for people whose primary mailboxes
are on the FAS UNIX mail system.

Step one: Obtaining Thunderbird

You can obtain a free download of Thunderbird from the Mozilla website. Follow the instructions on the site for installing Thunderbird.

Step two: Configuring Thunderbird

After installing Thunderbird you need to configure it for use with your FAS UNIX Mailbox

 1. If you've not used Thunderbird before, the Mail Account Setup Wizard should start on its own. To open the account wizard manually, go to the Tools menu and click Accounts Settings. In the left pane of the Account Settings dialog box, click Account Actions and then select Add Mail Account.

2. Enter your name as you want it to appear in the From field in outgoing mail and your email address. Then, click Continue.   

3. Thunderbird will attempt to automatically configure your account settings. This will fail and a message saying 
"Thunderbird failed to find the settings for your email account" will display. 
Enter the following settings:


Incoming Mail Server Settings:

  • Server Type: IMAP Mail Server
  • Server Name: imap.fas.harvard.edu   
  • Port: 993
  • User name: FAS user name
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password

Outgoing Mail Server settings:

  • Server Name: smtp.fas.harvard.edu   
  • Port: 587
  • Connection security: STARTTLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password
  • User name: FAS user name

    Click Create Account.
    Click OK to close the Account Settings dialog box.
