Harvard Earth Day E-Waste Recycling

Date:

Thursday, April 18, 2024, 12:00pm to 2:00pm

Location:

Science Center Plaza

Do you have an old phone with a shattered screen? A laptop that doesn't charge? A hard drive that’s been sitting in your office or lab? Come dispose of personal and University electronics sustainably and securely at Harvard Earth Day.

Proper disposal of sensitive materials through methods like shredding and recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and promotes responsible resource management. Secure destruction is important because it helps prevent sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands, which can lead to identity theft, fraud, or unauthorized access to confidential data. By utilizing secure destruction practices, you not only ensure your personal and proprietary information remains protected, but also contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment and support the principles of Earth Day by minimizing your ecological footprint.

HUIT will accept the following items for data destruction:

  • Computer towers
  • Laptops
  • Hard drives
  • Tablets
  • Backup tapes
  • Cell phones
  • Removable media (e.g. CDs, floppy disks)

Certificates of destruction will be provided to Harvard researchers if required to fulfill a contractual obligation.

Additionally, you can bring other working electronics that don’t require secure destruction to the freecycle for repurposing. If you have any questions, contact huit_adminops@harvard.edu.
